Stunned

General view with 1923 column

The Merzbau attempted to combine the formal elements of his art with the deeply personal aspect that was so important to him. It was also a work of phenomenal ambition where he tried to include almost everything. But perhaps, more then anything it will remain a tantalising mystery. As it is no more we rely on the accounts of the very few people who saw it completely and the few photos of the original studio, the first room of the merzbau.

I thoroughly recommend.John Elderfield's "Kurt Schwitters" and Gwendolen Webster's Gwendolen Webster's " Kurt Merz Schwitters"
