New York a Go-Go

Andy Warhol & Lou Reed

A fantastic collection of photos by Allan Tannenbaum of New York in the seventies, from the days before we learned to hate America because of their freedom, grrr freedom.

And in keeping with the seventies theme the official website of the Go-Go boot mailing list We are a diverse group, all sharing a common enthusiasm for women's boots, and the women who wear them, a diverse group with very specific interests.

Summer Drivin' Music 2005

Every year I make a summer drivin' CD, this is designed to get you in that summer mood while driving to the beach so it must be upbeat, summery and sound good in a car and it doesn't matter if it's really obvious. Summer has now officially arrived here in Dublin as I have made the first draft of 2005's summer driving CD.

Sugar Kane - Sonic Youth
Lotus - REM
SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the physic wall -The Flaming Lips (maybe the best feelgood summer hit ever only the Lips can sing such nonsense and make it sound meaningful)
Ice Cream Man - Jonathan Richman
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Watching the Detectives - Elvis Costello (a controversial choice but Elvis is always summer for me)
Surfin' on a Rocket - Air
Jammin' - Bob Marley
Lazy - Press2 featuring David Byrne
Move on Up - Curtis Mayfield
Hey Ya - Outkast
Build me up Buttercup - The Foundations
Here comes the Summer - The Undertones
Tony's Theme - The Pixies
Rockaway Beach - The Ramones
Cross Town Traffic - Jimmy Hendrix
Personality Crisis - The New York Dolls
Hillbilly Motorbike - Stereolab
A message to you Rudy - The Specials
Groovejet - Spiller
Allo - Les Rita Mitsouko

Biggles

biggles
In my mis-spent youth I read more Biggles books then is considered healthy, for those of you spared that pleasure Biggles (Capt Bigglesworth) was a British colonial boys-own-adventurer type who flew around the world teaching foreigners a lesson in many different exotic locations. He was a 'confirmed bachelor' who travelled the world with his mates Algy and Bertie generally leading a lifestyle that I assume got the books in trouble with Thatcher's section 28. There is now an exhaustive Biggles Information web site which lists all the books with their covers, all illustrations and plot summaries. How I ended up as a peace-loving lefty who disapproves of empires and colonialism in general I'll never know.

Four Courts planning

At Tuppenceworth they're running a campaign to object to the erection of railings in the front portico of the Four Courts in Dublin. The Four Courts is a beautiful building and it's quite extraordinary that they would try and make such a half assed addition to it and that's even before you take into consideration the implications of railing off such a symbol of Irish Justice. Bloomsday 2005

Barry McGovern reads from Cyclops

Some Bloomsday events around Dublin for tomorrow. It's going to be a lower key affair compared to last year but still lots to do. I recommend Barry McGovern reading from Ulysses on top of the Joyce Tower in Sandycove (pictured above from last year). This year's episode is Nausicaa

Revenge of the crazy right wing nutcase

The crazy right-wing nutcase now accuses me of being a religious nut. I think I might have made my arguements too subtle, next time I'll have to use MORE CAPITALISATION. OK, I know I'm new to right wing nuttiness but I'm a little confused, isn't religious fervour a good thing?

I'm sorry but there's something very cartoonish about the raving right (see!) that makes it hard not to respond in kind.

Still I think our friend misses a point, in Ireland we don't have advocates of evolution because there is no creationism vs evolution debate anymore then there is debate about Archbishop Ussher's calculations or for that matter how many angels dance on the head of a pin. You're not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy.

Contagious media showdown

The contagious media showdown winners are announced; 1st was Forget me not Panties, 2nd Crying while eating and 3rd Blogebrity with it's especially cruel A, B and C lists of bloggers full stats and lots more good projects at their site.

Crazy Irishblogging right wing nutcase

The great thing about blog aggregators is that you get to read blogs you wouldn't normally. A case in point is Atlantic Blog the blog of an american economist working in UCC. I previously mentioned his wacky free trade ideas but now he's taken up against evolution and disproved it with some well argued crazy talk. Now I'm an old school lefty who believes we should tolerate all ideas even the nutty ones and that emigrants to our country are especially welcome when they bring with them cultural diversity. But then I had a thought, isn't that a bit disrepectful? Shouldn't I try and empathise with this guy and see things from his point of view? So I did a little research into right wing thinking and have discovered that they believe that emigrants should integrate into their adopted countries, abandon their foreign culture and adopt that of their adopted homeland and if they they don't like that culture they can always leave. So in this spirit of empathy I say to Mr Atlantic Blog believe in evolution or get the hell back to where you came from you crazy right-wing nutcase.

Dun Laoghaire Baths Update

The latest news about the Dun laoghaire Baths proposal; on Sunday Dun Laoghaire had the biggest march in it's history when over 3,000 marched to protest against the baths proposal. Yesterday evening the Council met to discuss the plans and postponed taking a vote. I've heard that they are to postpone the vote until July but I'll have to confirm that. So far people power is working, opposition is growing and local politicians are listening. When I know more I'll post it here, in the meantime check out Save our Seafront.

Artists’ Resale Right / Droit de Suite

The Sculptors Society of Ireland (of which I am a member)position on Artists’ Resale Right/Droit de Suite, Alex Davis and Amy Strecker outline the workings of artist’s resale rights and its implications for artists. I've come across quite a bit of ill informed comment on this on the web particularly it has to be said in blogs, in contrast this is actually written by people who know what they're talking about. Is it just me or is the bloggysphere (irishblogs in particular)increasingly like being trapped in a taxi with a particularly opinionated and ill informed taxi driver?

Big Brother at school

Private fee paying St Andrews School in Dublin has introduced fingerprint scans to know if it's pupils are present, previously they introduced drugs tests (against Article 16 of the UN convention on the rights of the child this from the school who started the model UN in Ireland)
either someone has a serious big brother complex ar they are the baddest druggiest kids in Dublin, still you pays your money you takes your choices but I would worry about parents who think fingerprinting and drugtesting their children is necessary
