File this under why can’t Dublin be more like any number of French cities. In Lyon they have a bicycle rental project with 2000 bicycles. You sign up on a website give a deposit by cheque or credit card prepayment, the first 30 minutes are free the next hour 50cent and each subsequent hour €1-2 depending on how you subscribe and as most journeys are under 30 minutes 90% of the users pay nothing. All it takes is a little imagination and a desire to make the city work better.

I’m getting news from my mailing lists that the levees have broken in New Orleans and that up to 80% of the city is flooded and in the words of the Mayor ‘devastated’. The city has been evacuated but New Orleans is a beautiful city and it sounds like the damage will be appalling.

Flamenco dancers at the Harbour Plaza at yet another successful Dun Laoghaire festival of world cultures .
President Chavez of Venezuela wants to give cheap oil to poor communities in the USA. He went on to say that Venezuela could supply gasoline to Americans at half the price they now pay if intermediaries who “speculated … and exploited consumers” were cut out.
No wonder they want to assassinate him but I wonder now will Pat Robertson be excluded from the UK under their new anti terrorism rules for public speaking, writing or publishing that could foment, justify or glorify terrorist acts. or Misusing “a position of responsibility such as teacher, community or youth worker” to foster hatred will also provide grounds for deportation or exclusion.

This weekend the Dun Laoghaire festival of world cultures is on this weekend with over 160 events, mostly free. Highlights include Fun

Political correctness is one of those phrases that I’ve never really understood but then I came across this website the “world’s leading Nationalist Socialist and Facist resource centre” which is “uncorrupted by the forces of political correctness and Liberal Consensus” which means selling Hitler mugs and posters of Reinhard Heydrich. All in all I’ll stick with the liberal consensus.

An excellent gallery of B-movie posters

and a gallery of Cuban posters from the sixties including this one of Jesus as a guerilla

The Pixies talk about how they got back together without once mentioning money, ha. I saw them last year at Werchter and while they were good, could still play the songs and the songs are still great the old intensity just wasn’t there. But they’re still the Pixies and I’m going to see them tomorrow at Lansdowne road.
